Kirk didn't much like it either. When war had been declared between the Federation and the Klingon Empire, he and Spock had gone undercover to Organia, an apparently primitive planet occupied by a division of Klingon warriors. But the Organians were more advanced than either the Federation or the Klingons had anticipated, and had forced an uneasy truce between the two rival powers. That was how the event had played out in Kirk's universe.
However, in the mirror universe, once Starfleet had learned that a Klingon occupation force was on Organia, no attempt had been made to liberate the innocent Organian people. Instead, three starships, including Tiberius's I.S.S. Enterprise, had disrupted the surface of the Organian sun to induce a huge increase in solar flares. The ensuing mega storm had been so violent that it had penetrated the planet's magnetic field, sterilizing the entire world in hours. Flesh-and-blood Klingons and the energy-based Organians alike had perished. The Terran Empire considered the brutal obliteration of an innocent planet an appropriate lesson for the Klingons: No matter how savage the sons and daughters of Qo'noS believed themselves to be, the Terran Empire was prepared to be more savage.
In the end, however, outright war had been averted in both universes, although by two completely different means. But even if the details had been different, as Jean-Luc Picard had pointed out to Kirk, the patterns had been the same. The similar results of the Organian mission, among others, had prompted Picard to seek out the Federation's psycho historians
Intendant Spock picked up the padd, then pushed himself up to his feet.
"I presume you wish me to identify missed opportunities from the past, which might logically lead to the discovery of advanced technology today, in order to help Tiberius."
Kirk, Spock, and Tiberius agreed.
Tiberius added, "Pay particular attention to the encounter with something this Spock calls a 'doomsday machine." I don't believe the Empire ever charted one, which means it could still exist in our universe."
"I shall give the entire record my full attention," the intendant said stiffly.
"But I must return to Vulcan for a scheduled treatment."
Kirk rose to his feet, as did Spock and Tiberius.
"Thank you, Intendant. We look forward to meeting with you as soon as you're able."
Intendant Spock nodded wearily and gathered his robes around him.
"Later this evening. I--" "Bridge to Captain Kirk."
The voice of Fleet Admiral Alynna Nechayev interrupted the intendant. She was the current commander of the Sovereign, and had taken a personal interest in Starfleet's developing position on the mirror universe.
As well she might. Kirk knew. Admiral Nechayev had been one of the highest-ranking Starfleet officers to be replaced by a mirror duplicate.
"Go ahead. Admiral," Kirk said.
Nechayev appeared on the conference room viewer. She was communicating from the Sovereign's bridge. She made no apologies for her interruption.
"We've just received an urgent hail from a ship approaching the Vulcan system. Someone is in a hurry to speak with you."
"Who?" Kirk asked.
"Captain Picard," the taciturn admiral said.
"Or should I say, someone who claims to be him.
